The Benefits of Eating Organic Foods
|
|
Organic refers to how agricultural products are grown and processed. Organic foods have become increasingly popular in the last couple of years as more and more people become conscious about the quality of the food that they eat.
Organic farming maintains and replenishes soil fertility without using any toxic and persistent fertilizers and pesticides. Organic foods must be produced without the use of antibiotics, genetic modification, irradiation, synthetic hormones and other excluded practices (like animal cloning); and are minimally processed without artificial ingredients and preservatives to maintain the integrity of the food.
The Environmental Protection Agency warns that 30 percent of fungicides, 60 percent of herbicides and 30 percent of insecticides can be carcinogenic. This is a real concern because conventionally grown food is often laced with chemicals which are harmful to humans.
Pesticides can harm your health in many different ways. Besides being carcinogenic, pesticides are also neurotoxins, endocrine disruptors and immune system suppressors. Exposure to pesticides may also adversely affect the male reproductive system and cause miscarriages in women.
Aside from pesticide contamination, conventional produce, on average, has only 83 percent of the nutrients of organic produce. Studies show that organic crops yield higher levels of iron, magnesium, phosphorus and vitamin C, as well as significantly lesser amounts of toxic nitrates.
According to the Organic Trade Association, here are the other benefits of eating organic foods:
- Organic food taste great and are more nourishing for people and animals.
- Organic farming reduces health risks
- Organic farming helps prevent harmful chemicals from getting into the air, ground and water
- Organic farmers cultivate healthy soil, work in harmony with nature and strive to preserve diversity
- Organic farming encourages innovative research
- Organic agriculture helps keep rural communities healthy
There’s no question about it: organic food is superior to conventional produce.
This is the main reason why Dr. Joseph Mercola decided to change the formula of his popular natural energy bar, the cocoa cassava bar. Dr. Mercola’s new and improved organic cocoa cassava bar, as its name suggests, is now USDA-certified organic! It tastes better too and that’s saying something because the original cocoa cassava bars wouldn’t have been sold out if they were just healthy.
The all-new cocoa cassava bar contains no artificial sweeteners or added processed sugar. The base ingredient, cassava flour, is of course, organic. This natural health bar derives its sweetness from organic raw agave syrup, organic dark chocolate and organic raw cacao powder. And the supporting ingredients – coconut and chia seeds – are organic as well.
Great taste, optimal nutrition and respect for the environment – can another chocolate bar provide all of that?
