Can a Cocoa Cassava Bar Help Stop Cough?

Chocolate is arguably the world’s best-loved sweet. But did you know that chocolate can also help relieve cough?

Benefits Of CocoaBritish researchers have discovered that theobromine, an alkaloid substance present in cocoa which is chemically related to caffeine, is almost three times more effective in stopping persistent cough than codeine, which is recognized as the best cough medicine.

As a stimulant, the effects of theobromine are much milder than those of caffeine. Theobromine helps stop cough by suppressing the vagus nerve, which is responsible for causing coughing.

To test for the effectiveness of theobromine, researchers gave 10 healthy volunteers theobromine, a placebo or codeine at different times in a randomized double blind trial.

To compare the effects of the three agents, they measured the levels of capsaicin in the volunteers. Capsaicin is the hot compound found in red peppers and is used to test the effectiveness of cough medicines.

The capsaicin levels required to produce a cough was around one third higher in the group when given theobromine, compared to when they were given the placebo.

On the other hand, when the volunteers were given codeine, they only needed marginally higher levels of capsaicin to produce coughing.

The researchers also found that unlike regular cough treatments, theobromine did not produce any adverse effects on either the cardiovascular or central nervous systems.
